What Inspires You?

This was sent to me by BrokeNotBroken and I think it’s a wonderful poem.

As for inspiration:

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

W.E. Henley

Sometimes it’s the smallest things that give us the strength to keep moving forward despite the hurdles and incredible obstacles that are presented to us. I remember a time in college on spring break, I was lost and at a point in school where I needed to make some decisions about my direction, my passion, and I stumbled across “The Fountainhead” by Ayn Rand

The Fountainhead

Image via Wikipedia and spent my entire spring break reading this weighty tome.

When I returned to college, I was rejuvenated, but most importantly- inspired! What was a seemingly mindless existence turned into 2.5 years of dedication and resolve. The turning point was that book. Inspiration can come from anywhere.

What Inspires You? Is there a book, a poem, a place that makes you want to be, do, or feel differently?

Why not share that with us, I think everyone could use a little inspiration in these tough times.

I’m impressed you were able to finish Fountainhead over spring break. I just finished Atlas Shrugged and it took me weeks.

I’m inspired by the movie Fight Club. It’s one of the few DVDs I own and I love it’s theme of letting go and allowing that which is truly unimportant, slide. One of my favorite quotes is “this is your life and it’s ending one minutes at a time.” So appropriate, such a wake up call for me.

Everything seemed to ‘click’ with ‘Fountainhead’. I was in the second year at the school of Architecture at Georgia Tech. Howard Roark was an architecture student at the beginning of the book. He was constantly being told to color in the lines and that’s what they were teaching at Tech at the time. Having a natural stubborn streak (that is finally softening) and being fiercely independent, I felt a kinship to the strict moral integrity to oneself that Roark portrayed throughout the book. A great inspiration that lead to me returning to Tech and LEADING the next two years of my life versus following.

It was a whopper of a book. While my friends were out carousing, I dragged a lounge chair from the hotel near the street so I could watch the hundreds of college kids (ok,maybe just the fairer sex) ride the strip while I read the fountainhead ALL day long, every day of our spring break. I finished the book on our last day of spring break.

“FIght Club” is pretty stunning, both visually and metaphorically. I agree with the quote wholeheartedly.

    Great to hear from you…
