Puerto Penasco is developing into a tourist attraction. This is the main tourist spot along the point. This area is really only about 4 blocks by 4 blocks in density then it spreads out to heavier commercial traffic and businesses.

The only two real marinas for sailing vessels are nestled in the middle of the commercial area by the Naval Zone. The bay is pretty small and is taken up by numerous trawling boats at the commercial docks. Next door is a large commercial repair yard with a large lift, but you have to wait for the right tide to get into the lift.

This is the other marina that has slips for a sailing vessel in Puerto Penasco. Marina takes on a new meaning, this Marina only has one finger of slips. The rates at the time of inquiry where $400 plus per month depending on season. Clearly a matter of supply and demand as there are NO attractions or amenities by the marina. The surrounding area is heavy commercial traffic.

This is the entrance to the bay. The harbor master doe not encourage anchoring in the entrance for fear of being hit by another vessel in the night.

The local ‘Super Ley’ market is filled with baked goods, fresh meats and fish, and similar supplies we find in the US. Comparatively, fresh food costs were between 20-50% cheaper than in the US. A fresh baked muffin was approximately 0.33 cents US while the same muffin might be $1.25. A bagget of french bread was about 0.45 cents US and the comparable might have been around $2.00 in the US.

The vegetable isle wasn’t ‘overwhelmingly’ filled, but the produce was affordable and there was an ample variety.

Cholla Bay is a little farther south of Puerto Penasco and might be better situated to anchor a shallow draft boat.

Cholla bay is very shallow and dries out at low tide but by the point there are many many places a sailboat could anchor in 6′+ depth of water at low tide.

Smaller trailerable sailboats are the norm this far north up the Sea of Cortez. The high tides, the strong current, and the shallow waters preclude many deep draft vessels from exploring this area.

Just north up the beach of Cholla Bay are several plush resort hotels popping up and under construction. The road to Cholla Bay is surreal along sandy dunes with highrise resorts standing out in the middle of nothing.
