While I am sunbathing in Tucson building a trailer for our new home, a 1993 Gemini 3400 Catamaran that we purchased in San Carlos, Mexico, Hil had her 22 week Doc appointment. We were 99.9% certain that this child was going to be a boy. Of course, we were 99.9% certain Emma James was going to be a boy as well.

We were so certain that it was going to be a boy, we haven’t spent much time working on a girls name. We expected Nathaniel Cutter McDowell to be born November 18th, 2009 a boy. Back to the drawing board on the name game.

Most importantly, Hil and the baby are doing very well. The doctors reported an excellent check up on growth and activity for the baby. If averages are any indicator, our baby is right on track.

Unfortunately for Hil, she has to endure another trimester of a hot and humid summer. Emma James was born in October and the weather was just starting to break. Baby #2 is due in mid November, the weather will be cooler by then, but we still have to make it through July, August, and September.

By the time this baby is born, we should have the new boat squared away and ready. We will have about 6 weeks we can use the St. Simons house if it isn’t rented, but as of January 1, the house will be unavailable until the 1st week of May. We’ll be living on the boat with a 6 week old infant.

I don’t think we plan on traveling anywhere. The excitement of the new baby and the new boat will likely be enough to satisfy our adventure lust. It will also be a good time for me to keep working to stockpile cash.

I have given up trying to predict the future. Things are changing in our lives (mostly for the better) so quickly I can’t predict what will happen next month much less next year. Consider the boat. We found out Hil was pregnant in Key West, Florida. About two months later we sold our CSY 33 in Jacksonville, Florida. Within two weeks we had a contract on the Gemini in Mexico. Now about 6 weeks since we found the boat, I’m in Tucson building a trailer to haul the boat back to Georgia. Who could predict or plan for something like that. To most ‘normal’ people it would be insanity. For us, it’s about par for the course right now.

I can’t say that I always want it to be this way, but activity begits opportunity and I am certainly looking for some new opportunities.

The definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.

I believe it. I see people living this way all around us everyday. My father puts it another way, “Do something, even if it’s wrong.” While I wouldn’t knowingly suggest taking a course of action that is harmful, illegal, or immoral, I would whole heartedly encourage jumping off the ‘deep end’ into the great unknown. While it may be equally frightening, the unknown offers the advantage that if we do something that we don’t know- then we do know. Buddha himself would smile. A tiny slice of enlightenment wrapped with the adrenaline rush of a roller coaster ride brings us one step closer to living a life full of experiences and memories.

I know when I’m close to having a little breakthrough moment and discovering another gem towards the path of enlightenment when I get butterflies in my stomach and I start second guessing myself. It is almost a sure sign that the decision I’m about to make, while maybe unorthodox and unconventional, is probably the best decision to make and that I should keep trucking forward despite my discomfort.

Almost without fail, after taking action, the roadblocks and obstacles were never as big as I imagined and the impossible becomes possible.

A truly extraordinary life is waiting just around the corner.
